Learn from U of M Extension at the 2015 Minnesota State Fair!

If you go to the "Great Minnesota Get-Together," be sure to participate in fun and educational U of M Extension opportunities. Extension discovers science-based solutions, delivers practical education and engages Minnesotans to build a better future.
Here is where to see Extension at the fair.

4-H youth at the Minnesota State Fair4-H building & barns
See the 4-H State Fair website, or use the free "4-H at the Minnesota State Fair" app for event schedules, Arts-In performance times, results, announcements and maps. Find the app by visiting the 4-H State Fair website.
  • Ongoing: Nearly 6,000 youth participate, showing exhibits, performing in shows and showing livestock. These activities feature the knowledge and skills 4-H'ers have acquired throughout the year. About 2,200 "blue ribbon" kids exhibit livestock in the animal barns. 
  • Ongoing: Exciting scientific activities to try in the 4-H building include drones used in agriculture and Rube Goldberg machines. Watch "Chef for a day" cooking presentations, offered twice daily. 
  • Aug. 28, 1:30 p.m.: 4-H beef exhibit in the Warner Coliseum. 
  • Aug. 29, 5:45 p.m.: Purple Ribbon auction in the AgStar arena.

U of M building


In the U of M building
  • Aug. 29, 11 a.m.: Gary Wyatt, Extension forestry educator, “Natural foods and decoratives from the woods and backyard,” U of M stage. 
  • Aug. 30, 11 a.m.: Gary Wyatt, “Woody invasive species: ID and control,” U of M stage 
  • Sept. 6, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.: Master Gardeners from Anoka County will share plant diagnostic information, along with plant samples, and answer gardening questions 
Eco Experience building

Eco Experience building

  • Extension’s Cold Climate Housing group will present how to build a new home that “lives better, works better and lasts longer” and is so efficient that you could eliminate your utility bill. A special feature will be the design, technologies and systems used by an interdisciplinary team of students from from Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, Construction Management and Architecture. The University of Minnesota student team beat 32 teams to take the top award in the 2015 Department of Energy Race to Zero competition. Each afternoon, local industry professionals with experience in Zero Energy Ready Homes will share insights and tips. 
  • Aug. 29, 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.: Gary Wyatt, Extension forestry educator, "Natural foods and decoratives from the woods or backyard," Food stage. 
Agriculture-Horticulture building
  • Ongoing: Master Gardener volunteers answer gardening questions 9 a.m.-9 p.m. 
  • Ongoing: Gardening presentations on The Dirt Stage. 
  • Sept. 2, 1 p.m.: The Honey Bees program team, including Gary Reuter, Extension entomologist, will show off a "bee beard."
DNR building
  • Ongoing: Master Naturalists answer questions about wildlife in Minnesota, wildlife wing 
  • Aug. 30, 1 p.m.: Gary Wyatt, Extension forestry educator, "Woody invasive species: ID and control," DNR stage. 
  • Aug. 30, 11 a.m.: Jeff Hahn, Extension entomologist, presents "Insect pests of gardens and yards." 
  • Sept. 3 at 3 p.m.: Gary Reuter, Extension entomologist, "Honey bees, beekeeping and research," DNR stage.

State Fair radio interview
  • (Moved to in front of the 4-H Building) Aug. 28, noon: Mark Seeley, Extension climatologist, will appear on tpt’s Almanac. 
  • Sept. 4, 11 a.m.: Mark Seeley will broadcast the annual Minnesota Weather Quiz on MPR with host Tom Weber from Carousel Park. 
WCCO
  • Aug. 29, 8 a.m.: Julie Weisenhorn, Extension horticulturist, and Eric Watkins, Extension turfgrass researcher, on "Smart Gardens" with host Denny Long. 
  • Sept. 5, 8 a.m.: Mary Meyer, Extension horticulturist, and Sam Bauer, turfgrass educator, on “Smart Gardens” with host Denny Long.
